Hunter Metcalf fought to hold back tears as he recounted the devastating moment he tried to save his twin brother Austin, who was fatally stabbed in the heart during a high school track meet.
On April 2, at around 10 a.m., Hunter was with Austin—his twin and a standout athlete competing in the discus and shot put events at David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
“We did everything together,” Hunter said, his voice trembling. “You name anything in the world, it was always us two. We were always basically one person.” Austin, a football MVP and Hunter’s closest companion, was the heart and soul of their bond.
Hunter, born just four minutes after Austin, described how the twins—both juniors at Memorial High School near Dallas—were resting under the school’s tent when an unexpected confrontation occurred.
“A kid from another school came into our tent,” Hunter explained. “We asked him to move, but he started getting aggressive, talking trash. My brother stepped in and said, ‘You need to move.’”
The situation escalated quickly. “And he said, ‘Make me move,’” Hunter recalled in an emotional interview with ABC affiliate WFAA.
