The outing took place just one day after the heartbreaking discovery of Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, found dead in their Santa Fe home. Despite the immense tragedy, the sisters were seen exchanging a smile as they departed the restaurant.

Their composed demeanor sparked mixed reactions online, with one social media user commenting, “I know people grieve differently, but when your dad was found the way he was, and with the deaths still being investigated, they look way too happy and relaxed.”

The sisters’ seemingly lighthearted demeanor continued to stir controversy online, with social media users expressing their skepticism. “Their smiles look awfully disturbing,” one person commented, while another questioned, “They look very happy… why?!” Others shared their suspicions, with one writing, “This whole thing is just weird and strange,” and another adding, “Excited for the life insurance coming.” A fifth user even remarked, “Looking like they just hit the lottery.”

Amid the speculation, Leslie Hackman had previously spoken out in an exclusive interview, breaking her silence on their father’s passing. “We were close. I hadn’t talked to them for a couple of months, but everything was normal and everything was good,” she shared, reflecting on her relationship with Gene Hackman before his tragic death.

Gene Hackman’s daughters had previously described their father as a private man and noted that he had been in good health before his sudden passing. As the investigation continues, the family remains in search of answers.

As previously reported, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were discovered dead in their Santa Fe Summit home on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 26. While authorities have not suspected foul play, the circumstances surrounding their deaths remain under investigation.

A caretaker was the first to discover the lifeless bodies of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, placing a frantic 911 call just before 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday. According to an affidavit, maintenance workers also stumbled upon the tragic scene.

The distressed caller informed emergency responders that they were unable to enter the home but could see two unresponsive individuals through the window. His versatility and ability to excel in any genre made him one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors.

In a candid interview with Empire, Hackman opened up about his decision to retire at 74. He explained, “The straw that broke the camel’s back was actually a stress test that I took in New York. Unlike many of his Hollywood peers, Gene Hackman largely stayed out of the social spotlight after his retirement, making only occasional appearances at award shows. His decision to retire remained permanent, and he lived a more private life in his later years.

In his personal life, Hackman met Betsy Arakawa in the mid-1980s when she was working part-time at a gym in California. The 95-year-old actor and his 63-year-old wife quickly formed a bond, eventually moving in together and later settling in Santa Fe, where they spent the remainder of their lives.

He described the moment as both sorrowful and celebratory, a time to mourn the actor’s death while also recognizing and celebrating his legendary career.

Francis Ford Coppola continued, “Gene Hackman was a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity. I mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution.”

Filmmaker Edgar Wright also reacted to the news, simply writing, “The greatest.” Meanwhile, actor George Takei paid tribute to Hackman, calling him “one of the true giants of the screen,” honoring the profound impact he had on the film industry.

George Takei further expressed, “Gene Hackman could play anyone, and you could feel a whole life behind it. He could be everyone and no one, a towering presence or an everyday Joe. That’s how powerful an actor he was.”

In the wake of Hackman’s death on February 26, his nephew, Tim Hackman, shared that the family had initially planned for Betsy to handle his funeral arrangements, considering their significant age gap. At the time of their passing, Betsy was 63, and Gene was 95, marking the end of a long and meaningful partnership.

As reported by The Daily Mail, Tim Hackman, 51, explained, “So the preparedness of it was that he would go first and that we would probably, maybe, depending on whatever it was [Betsy] had set up, would go down there and pay our condolences and everything.” This comment reflected the family’s understanding of the natural course of events, with arrangements likely being made by Betsy for her husband’s eventual passing.

With Gene and Betsy’s unexpected passing, those initial plans were completely upended. Tim Hackman admitted, “Now with this, it significantly changes things. I have no idea what — I’m assuming one of his kids will probably take over — and [plan]. I don’t know. It’s still very, very early.”

He also shared that the family first learned of the couple’s deaths through Gene’s daughter, Leslie Hackman, who had been in the closest contact with them. The tragic news reached the family on Wednesday night, just before it was made public.

The news of Gene and Betsy’s deaths came as a shock to the family, as they were unaware of any major health concerns. Tim Hackman explained, “I mean, he was old. I’m sure he had some [health] concerns, but nothing that was shared.”

Tim last saw his uncle 11 years ago at his father Richard’s funeral. Richard, Gene’s brother, had worked as his stuntman. Despite the time that had passed since they last saw each other, Tim emphasized that Gene was not estranged from the family, highlighting the enduring bond they shared.

Gene Hackman preferred a quiet, private life and rarely traveled. As Tim Hackman shared, “He only came to California during the warm weathers, and then he just stayed in New Mexico.”

Most of Tim’s communication with Gene had been through Betsy, as Gene had reached an age where he wasn’t very communicative with the family. Despite this, the bond remained strong, and Betsy played a key role in keeping the family connected.

Tim shared that his communication with Betsy was primarily focused on personal updates, saying, “I was just basically giving her updates on my kids and how they were doing and how I was doing because our major connection was the military background, but that was it really.”

He described Betsy as Gene’s primary caregiver, emphasizing her vital role in supporting him and helping him live as long as he did. “She’d just always say, ‘Oh, [Gene’s] doing good.’ I mean, he was moving around a lot for 95,” Tim recalled, highlighting Betsy’s dedication and care in ensuring Gene’s well-being.

The medical examiner’s office has indicated that final toxicology and autopsy results for Gene and Betsy may take four to six weeks to complete. Sheriff Adan Mendoza explained, “We want to make sure that we get the investigation completed properly. And we want to release the proper information.”

As Gene’s funeral plans remain uncertain, attention has shifted to the circumstances surrounding his wife Betsy’s death. According to a search warrant obtained by TMZ, a Santa Fe detective discovered an open pill bottle with scattered pills near Betsy’s body. This finding has sparked further speculation online, adding an element of mystery to the already tragic situation.

The detective reportedly noted the presence of three dogs—one roaming the property, another found near Betsy’s body, and a third discovered dead inside a bathroom closet, about 10 to 15 feet away.

Authorities also observed that a heater had been moved, and Gene Hackman was found dead in a separate room. However, the affidavit clarified that there were no immediate signs of a gas leak, ruling out one potential cause of their deaths for the time being. Investigators are still working to gather all the details surrounding the couple’s passing.

As more details emerged, social media users quickly began to speculate. One commenter wrote, “Strange… very strange.” Another expressed skepticism, saying, “Sounds staged, especially the scattered pills part.”

Theories about hidden motives and financial gain also surfaced, with some suggesting that after Betsy inherited millions, someone next in line might have silenced any remaining witnesses—including the pet. These online discussions have fueled further intrigue, as many await the official results of the investigation.

As more details unfolded, some initially suspected a different cause of death. One user shared, “This is heartbreaking to read, I honestly thought it was carbon monoxide poisoning until reading this article 😢🙏.”

Theories continued to swirl as more netizens reacted to the developing mystery. Some believed that grief may have been too much for Betsy to bear, suggesting it could have contributed to the tragic outcome. As speculation mounted, the ongoing investigation remained the focal point, with many hoping for more clarity in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, some dismissed the suspicions entirely, commenting, “Nothing weird about that💁‍♀️🙄.” Others questioned whether certain details at the scene had been deliberately staged.

One user theorized, “My guess is that he collapsed and died in the mudroom, maybe after exerting himself on a walk (at 95 years old, it could have been anything), and then she became distressed after finding him and took her own life. The dog could have also gotten into the pills or died of starvation/thirst thereafter.”

These varying theories continue to fuel the online conversation, with speculation running high as the investigation progresses.

However, not everyone joined the wave of conjecture. One commenter urged restraint, pleading, “Please stop making assumptions about this tragedy. We don’t have all the facts, and jumping to conclusions only adds to the pain of those affected.” This plea for caution reminded others to be mindful and respectful while the investigation continued.

  1. Several reasons why the girls could have been smiling… They were remembering happier times with their Dad. They were relieved because their parents died together and didn’t have to live with the loss of their beloved partners. The girls were given a list of burial instructions that the elder Hackmans had left with their attorney; it was a relief not to have to make had decisions.
What does some of the public get from wasting time making dark and disturbing assumptions?
