President Donald Trump has signed a highly debated executive order called “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” which could dramatically reshape the future of U.S. elections.
The executive order demands that voters present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote, such as a passport or government-issued ID, effectively excluding anyone without these documents from participating in elections.
Additionally, the order mandates states to work alongside federal agencies to exchange voter data and identify noncitizens. While proponents argue it ensures election integrity, critics warn that it could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, concentrate more power in the federal government, and potentially suppress voter turnout. Legal challenges are expected, with many questioning the president’s authority to override existing voting laws, with some even calling the order “unlawful.”
