Donald Trump and his inner circle are currently at the center of a major controversy following the leak of messages from a private Signal group, raising serious questions about his leadership and credibility.
But could there be more challenges looming for the president?
Although Trump has been back in the White House for less than 100 days, concerns about the stability of his administration are already surfacing.
Veteran political analyst Adam Boulton suggests that Trump’s greatest threat may not come from the Democratic opposition, but from within his own team — specifically, his Vice President, JD Vance.
The Challenges Facing Trump’s Presidency
Since returning to office, Donald Trump has made a series of bold moves, some of which have even raised concerns among his most loyal supporters.
Trump’s administration has adopted a confrontational stance on trade, imposing tariffs on key allies such as Canada and Mexico. His foreign policy decisions have also stirred controversy, including renaming the Gulf of Mexico, temporarily halting aid to Ukraine, and beginning the deportation of Venezuelans to El Salvador. Additionally, his aggressive approach to Greenland has led to speculation that he may be seeking to assert control over the island.
These unpredictable actions, combined with Trump’s history of personal and political controversies, have created tension within his inner circle. As the pressure mounts, some members of the administration may start to view Vice President JD Vance as a more stable alternative.
JD Vance’s Complex Relationship with Trump
JD Vance, a former venture capitalist and author of Hillbilly Elegy, initially emerged as a vocal critic of Trump, even going so far as to call him “America’s Hitler.”
However, over time, Vance shifted his position and became one of Trump’s most ardent supporters.
Recently, Vance’s loyalty has been called into question following the release of private messages from a Signal group, in which he appeared to subtly criticize Trump. The leaked messages, shared with journalist Jeffrey Goldberg, raised eyebrows among political analysts, casting doubt on the depth of Vance’s commitment to the president.

Goldberg’s Revelations and Vance’s Dilemma
Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, inadvertently found himself part of a conversation in which JD Vance expressed doubts about President Trump’s consistency. In the leaked Signal group chat, Vance appeared to question whether Trump recognized the contradictions in his policies. Specifically, Trump advocated for a unilateral U.S. strike against the Houthis to protect international shipping routes, yet insisted that European nations should bear more responsibility for similar actions.
“I’m not sure the president realizes how contradictory this is to his current message about Europe,” Vance noted in the chat, according to Goldberg’s report.
As Vice President, Vance occupies one of the most influential roles in the country, and should political tensions continue to rise, he could potentially ascend to the presidency. While some conservatives see Vance as a rational alternative to lead the nation if Trump falters, others question his ideological consistency. Vance’s evolving views on Trump raise important questions about how he would govern if given the chance.
A Nation on Edge
The debate over Trump’s stability comes at a time when American democracy is facing heightened scrutiny. Staffan Lindberg, a political scientist at V-Dem, warned, “The USA now appears to be moving towards a shift away from democracy under President Trump. I believe the implications of this will be significant globally.”
Tara Setmayer, former communications director for the Republican Party, echoed similar concerns in an interview with The Guardian. “We are nearing Defcon 1 for our democracy, yet many in the media and opposition leadership seem to be failing to convey this urgency to the American public. This normalization of the situation is the greatest threat we face right now.”
Trump’s actions have exacerbated these fears. A recent incident in which a French scientist was reportedly denied entry into the U.S. after border officials discovered messages on his phone critical of the Trump administration further fueled concerns. The French Minister of Higher Education and Research condemned the denial, stating that the researcher was turned away simply because his phone contained private conversations in which he expressed his personal views on Trump’s research policies.
What Are the Potential Avenues for Removing Trump from Office?
As political tensions within the administration intensify, there are several potential paths for Trump’s removal from office. The most well-known option is impeachment, a process Trump has already endured twice during his first term.
Another avenue is the application of the 25th Amendment, which allows the Vice President and a majority of the cabinet to declare the president “unable to fulfill the powers and responsibilities of his office.” This could provide a route for Trump’s removal should the administration believe his leadership is no longer sustainable.

Trump’s Options and the Path to Removal
Trump has the option to contest any decision aimed at removing him from office, which would trigger a process requiring Congress to intervene. To permanently remove him, a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate would be required.
Another potential scenario is political pressure leading Trump to resign, similar to what transpired with President Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal. While this outcome might seem unlikely, Trump’s increasingly erratic behavior and the mounting tensions within his administration could push Republicans to explore alternative leadership options.
Would a Vance Presidency Be Any Different?
Even if JD Vance were to take over the presidency, there’s no guarantee he would bring significant change. Many analysts believe Vance has closely aligned himself with Trump’s policies, meaning his presidency might simply continue the current administration’s direction.
Regardless of how events unfold in the coming months, one thing is clear: the Trump administration remains highly unpredictable, and the likelihood of internal conflicts continues to grow. As scrutiny increases, all eyes will be on JD Vance — whether as Trump’s loyal vice president or as a potential successor.
