On the evening of October 4, 2024, tragedy struck as 2024 Miss Teen Rodeo Kansas, Emma C. Brungardt, lost her life in a heartbreaking single-vehicle accident. Emma, who was an active member of the Colby College Community Rodeo Team, was riding alongside her teammates when the crash occurred, leaving five others injured.
The devastating incident took place at a Y intersection on County Road 21. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s report, the 2007 Ford F-250 truck veered off the road, colliding with a row of trees before coming to a halt. The vehicle was found upright, facing south at the edge of the tree line. Among the injured was the 18-year-old driver from Flagler, Colorado.

At just 19 years old, Emma tragically passed away at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 9:44 p.m. on October 4, 2024. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but despite their efforts, Emma’s life could not be saved. The other passengers— a 20-year-old woman from Larned, a 19-year-old woman from Newton, a 19-year-old woman from Galva, and an 18-year-old man from Council Grove— along with the driver, were all rushed to Citizens Medical Center in Colby for medical treatment.

Emma, a native of Blue Rapids, Kansas, was a sophomore at Colby College, where she was pursuing a degree in equine management and production. A dedicated rodeo competitor, Emma excelled in events such as goat tying, breakaway roping, and team roping. Her passion for rodeo led her to Colby College on a scholarship after graduating from Valley Heights USD 498. Emma’s talent, determination, and love for the sport left a lasting impact on both her teammates and the community.

Emma’s untimely death has left an indelible mark on her community. The Colby College Community Rodeo Team honored her with a heartfelt tribute, expressing their deep sorrow and remembering her as a beacon of positivity and kindness. “Her light will live on in and around the rodeo arena,” they shared, reflecting on the joy she brought to everyone she encountered.
The Miss Rodeo Kansas Pageant also extended their condolences, describing Emma as a truly remarkable young woman who embodied the very essence of a rodeo queen. They praised her infectious smile and exceptional character, acknowledging the lasting impact she made on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Emma’s spirit will continue to inspire, both in the rodeo world and beyond.

Emma’s unwavering dedication to the rodeo and Western lifestyle was evident from an early age. As a first-generation cowgirl, she proudly competed in the Kansas Wild Horse Youth Challenge for four years, clinching grand champion titles in both 2019 and 2021. Emma also showcased her exceptional talent and passion for the sport by participating in the Kansas High School Rodeo Association for two years, making her mark in the rodeo community.
Her sudden and tragic passing is an immense loss to her family, friends, and the entire rodeo world. Emma’s talent, spirited energy, and positive presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched and the inspiration she leaves behind.
