Avery Koonce: A Shining Star Gone Too Soon – The Tragic Story Behind Her Sudden Passing
Avery Koonce was more than just an athlete—she was a force of nature. A standout at Thrall High School in Texas, she blazed past records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, captivating her community with her speed, spirit, and strength.
Her love for running wasn’t just a passion—it was a purpose. That purpose took her to the prestigious U.S. Air Force Academy, where she joined the women’s track and field team, eager to push herself even further. But tragically, just as her journey was beginning, it was cut devastatingly short.
On September 4, 2024, emergency responders were called to Avery’s dorm room in Colorado Springs. What they found was heartbreaking: 19-year-old Avery was unresponsive. Despite every effort to save her, it was too late. She was declared dead at the scene. No signs of trauma were found—only questions and sorrow.
It was Avery’s fellow cadets who first discovered her in distress, triggering an urgent response and investigation. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office would later reveal the devastating cause of her death: complications from pneumonia.
The New York Post reported that Avery had developed Paeniclostridium sordellii sepsis, a rare and deadly bacterial infection, following a viral illness known as parainfluenza laryngotracheobronchitis—a severe infection of the lower respiratory tract. This aggressive secondary infection overwhelmed her immune system, leading to septic shock.
According to Dr. Michael Baden, a renowned forensic pathologist, Avery’s life might have been saved with timely antibiotic treatment. “In essence, she died of untreated pneumonia,” he said. Her symptoms—persistent coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing—were clear warning signs that something was seriously wrong.
But like so many young, driven individuals, Avery may not have realized the gravity of her illness. Just days before her death, she was pushing through her symptoms, focused on her training and classes.
Her death sent shockwaves through the Air Force Academy and her hometown. Avery wasn’t just an athlete—she was a high-achiever in every sense: a cheerleader, powerlifter, band member, and cross-country runner. She carried a radiant spirit and an unshakable work ethic, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and kindness.
Her loss is immeasurable. And though her time here was tragically brief, Avery Koonce’s impact will never be forgotten.

A Legacy of Light: Honoring the Life and Dreams of Avery Koonce
Avery Koonce had big dreams. Passionate about science and the human body, she planned to major in biology and minor in kinesiology, with hopes of one day becoming a physical therapist for pilots—combining her love of sports, service, and healing.
But on September 4, 2024, those dreams came to a heartbreaking end.
Just eight days later, on September 12, the community gathered to remember and celebrate the extraordinary young woman Avery was. A memorial service was held at Tiger Stadium in her hometown of Thrall, Texas. In a powerful show of love and unity, around 100 of Avery’s fellow cadets traveled all the way from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado to pay tribute to their teammate, friend, and sister-in-arms.
“We lost an incredible teammate,” said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, Superintendent of the Academy, as he reflected on Avery’s profound impact. “In her short time with us, Avery left an undeniable mark on her squadron, her track team, and her class.”
Avery’s family, devastated by the loss, shared a heartfelt statement through the Academy—words that captured both the weight of their grief and the depth of their love:
“Our daughter, Cadet Avery Koonce, was an incredibly bright light in this broken world. Our lives will forever be diminished because of her absence. Avery is truly loved by so many. We have peace in the knowledge Avery is in the arms of her Heavenly Father and we will be with her again. Avery was not a perfect person but was a perfect daughter. Loving on her brothers and learning how to live with Avery’s loss is our only focus right now. We are beyond blessed for the 19 amazing years we got to call Avery ours. We are praying for all of those that are bearing the incredible darkness of her loss.”
Though her time was short, Avery’s impact will live on in the hearts of those who knew her and those who now carry her memory forward. She was a runner, a scholar, a sister, a daughter, a teammate—a shining light that will never be forgotten.
