A recent remark by Karoline Leavitt, the 36th and youngest White House press secretary, has ignited controversy and sparked conversations about political etiquette following former President Joe Biden’s return to the public eye.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has found herself at the center of a growing controversy following a pointed remark aimed at former President Joe Biden during his first major public appearance since leaving office.
Biden took the stage on April 15, 2025, at the national conference of Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD) in Chicago, as part of a nationwide Social Security Day of Action. His speech focused on protecting and strengthening the Social Security program — and took aim at recent policy shifts under President Donald Trump’s administration.
But it was Leavitt’s reaction, delivered shortly before Biden’s remarks, that lit up social media.
“My first reaction when seeing former President Biden was speaking tonight was, I’m shocked that he is speaking at nighttime. I thought his bedtime was much earlier than his speech tonight,” said Leavitt, in a comment widely interpreted as a swipe at Biden’s age and stamina.
The backlash was immediate and intense.
Across Facebook and Instagram, users criticized Leavitt’s tone as inappropriate and disrespectful. “Very rude. She’s talking about a former U.S. President. Attorney Jason Turkish, whose law firm represents over 32,000 Social Security claimants, spoke at the ACRD event. “We’ve always believed that Social Security is off-limits to political interference. This shift is deeply unsettling for many of our clients,” he said, noting that some requirements have already been walked back in response to public pressure.
Biden’s speech came three months after his farewell address on January 15, in which he thanked the American people for five decades of public service and urged continued commitment to democratic values.
