Trump Administration Sounds Alarm on Nation’s Top Threat: Fentanyl and Global Drug Cartels
In a stark warning to lawmakers, top officials in President Donald Trump’s administration have identified the most pressing danger to U.S. national security: the flood of fentanyl pouring in from international drug cartels.
Speaking before the Senate Intelligence Committee this week, administration leaders revealed that these cartels were directly linked to the deaths of more than 54,000 Americans from synthetic opioids in just a single year.
“The cartels were largely responsible for the deaths of over 54,000 U.S. citizens from synthetic opioids during the 12-month period ending in October 2024,” said Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard in her opening remarks, underscoring the scale of the crisis.
