Having a dog around a small, helpless baby can make some people uneasy—especially when that dog is a pit bull, a breed often misunderstood and unfairly labeled as aggressive.
But one California mom is challenging that stereotype after her beloved pit bull, Sasha, became the hero of a terrifying night.
Latana Chai, mother to baby Masailah, says the two—her daughter and Sasha—have been inseparable since birth. Born just days apart, they share everything: a bed, bath time, and a deep, unshakable bond.
That bond would be put to the ultimate test one Saturday night.
Around midnight, Latana heard a loud bang outside her home. That’s when Sasha’s behavior suddenly changed—she began barking frantically and hurling herself at the back door.
“I heard like, a loud bang and I was like, ‘what’s going on?’ I heard Sasha crying and she kept jumping at the door,” Latana recalled in an interview with Kare 11. “As soon as I got to the door, she runs in and starts barking.”
Latana opened the door and Sasha bolted straight into baby Masailah’s room. That’s when Latana saw it—thick, black smoke creeping down from the ceiling. A fire had broken out in their neighbor’s home and was quickly spreading toward theirs.
Without hesitation, Sasha grabbed baby Masailah by her diaper and began dragging her to safety.
Thanks to Sasha’s quick instincts and warning barks, the family was able to escape before the flames reached them. What could have been a tragic night turned into a story of survival, all thanks to the love and loyalty of one incredible pit bull.

Sadly, pit bulls still carry the unfair stigma of being aggressive or dangerous.
But stories like Sasha’s remind us that, in the right environment, pit bulls can be loyal, loving, and even life-saving members of the family.
