Canada’s New Prime Minister Delivers Bold Rebuke to Trump in Victory Speech

New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Wastes No Time Taking Aim at Trump in Victory Speech

In a powerful and pointed address delivered just moments after securing victory, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wasted no time calling out U.S. President Donald Trump.

Carney, 60, officially stepped into the role following Justin Trudeau’s resignation last month after a decade in office. Now leading the Liberal Party into a new era, Carney addressed supporters in Ottawa in the early hours of April 29, delivering a speech that was both unifying and unapologetically defiant.

“Humility means accepting that one of a government’s core duties is to prepare for the worst—not just hope for the best,” Carney declared.

With sharp clarity, he added, “I’ve been sounding the alarm for months: America wants our land, our resources, our water—our country. That will never happen. Not on our watch.”

“These are not empty threats. President Trump is actively trying to break us—so America can own us. That will never happen. Not now. Not ever,” Prime Minister Carney declared, his tone resolute. “But we must also face a hard truth: our world has fundamentally changed.”

Carney Responds to Trump’s Remarks, Pledges Stronger Sovereignty for Canada

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s comments came in response to remarks made by former President Donald Trump, who mocked Canadians for allegedly wanting to become the 51st U.S. state. Trump also infamously referred to Justin Trudeau as the “Governor of Canada” before leaving office.

While Trump has suggested that Canada could be “America’s greatest state” if it joined the union, he claimed Canada only functions as it does because the U.S. spends $200 billion annually to subsidize it.

In his response, Carney emphasized that Canadians are “over the shock of the American betrayal,” but warned that the lessons learned must never be forgotten. “We must look out for ourselves, and above all, we must take care of each other,” Carney said.

He made it clear that his discussions with President Trump would focus on the future economic and security relationship between the two nations, with the understanding that Canada has numerous other options for prosperity. “When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss how two sovereign nations can move forward—knowing that we have many alternatives to the U.S. to secure a prosperous future for all Canadians,” Carney stated.

The Prime Minister rallied the nation, saying, “In the face of this crisis, united, we are buying Canadian.” He reminded the country of its collective strength and the ongoing efforts to support one another in the midst of challenges created by Trump’s rhetoric.

“We are exploring every resource this country has to offer, standing by our friends and neighbors who are being targeted by President Trump, in a crisis we did not create,” Carney continued.

“United, we will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7—an economy that works for everyone.”

The G7, an informal group of the world’s largest developed economies, includes the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
