Tragic Plane Crash Claims 12 Lives, Including Renowned Musician Aurelio Martínez
A devastating plane crash off the coast of Roatán Island in the Caribbean Sea has left at least 12 people dead, including several U.S. citizens and beloved Honduran musician and politician, Aurelio Martínez.
The small aircraft plunged into the sea just moments after takeoff. According to Carlos Padilla, a Honduran civil aviation official, the plane made “a sharp turn to the right of the runway” before crashing into the water. A nearby fisherman who narrowly avoided being struck by the falling aircraft recounted the harrowing moment as the plane hit the sea.
Efforts to reach the crash site have been hindered by treacherous terrain. “There are 30 meters (98 feet) of rocks, and it’s impossible to reach the site by foot or swimming,” explained Roatán Fire Captain Franklin Borjas, noting that rescue divers are operating under zero visibility conditions.
The tragedy has prompted an immediate response from Honduran President Xiomara Castro, who has activated an Emergency Operations Committee to coordinate the efforts of various agencies. The country’s transport ministry confirmed that there were 14 people aboard the flight, including the crew.
Among those lost was Aurelio Martínez, a celebrated figure in Garífuna music and culture. His passing has deeply affected the region and beyond. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Belize paid tribute, calling him “a great friend of Belize and a true champion of Garífuna culture and music.” They added, “His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who loved his art and his people.”
Preliminary reports suggest the crash may have been caused by a mechanical failure. The U.S. State Department has confirmed the death of one American citizen and has extended condolences to the victim’s family.
