Jeanine Pirro Appointed Interim U.S. Attorney for D.C., Stirring Reaction Across Legal and Media Circles

Washington, D.C. — In a surprise development that’s sparking widespread commentary, former judge and television personality Jeanine Pirro has been named the interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia—a role considered among the most high-profile legal posts in the nation.

The announcement was made by former President Donald Trump via his social media platform, praising Pirro’s formidable legal credentials and her long-standing dedication to law and order. Trump called her “in a class by herself” and cited her as “incredibly well qualified,” highlighting her past service as a judge and district attorney in Westchester County, New York.

Pirro, best known in recent years as a co-host of Fox News’ The Five, is stepping away from the network after 14 years. Fox News confirmed her departure with a statement of gratitude: “Jeanine Pirro has been a wonderful addition to The Five and a beloved presence across FOX News Media. We wish her great success in her new role in Washington.”

Her appointment follows the collapse of the previous nomination of Ed Martin, whose bid to lead the D.C. office faced roadblocks in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Chief among the critics was Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), who expressed concern over Martin’s interpretation of the January 6 Capitol riot prosecutions. “I’ve indicated to the White House that I wouldn’t support his nomination,” Tillis said, emphasizing the need for impartiality in the politically sensitive D.C. jurisdiction.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) later confirmed that Martin’s nomination had stalled, noting that the lack of committee support and an incomplete background check ended his prospects. “In legal terms, he remains interim U.S. Attorney until late May, but a new interim appointment is now expected to follow,” Durbin explained.

Pirro’s appointment, while legal under interim rules and not requiring Senate confirmation, has stirred both praise and scrutiny. While supporters commend her decades of experience and tough-on-crime approach, critics are wary of her deep ties to conservative media and opinion-driven commentary.

Still, Pirro brings a notable track record in criminal prosecution and public service. Before becoming a household name on cable news, she led significant cases as district attorney and earned a reputation for her assertive legal style.

Now stepping into a role that oversees complex and often politically sensitive federal cases, Pirro’s leadership will be under intense national scrutiny. Whether she can strike the right balance between legal objectivity and her outspoken public persona remains to be seen—but her appointment undeniably signals a bold new chapter in her career.
