Just moments after enjoying a dinner and sharing laughter with friends in Assisi, Italy, Molly McGovern, the 23-year-old daughter of Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern, tragically passed away on April 23.
Molly’s resilience defied all odds after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer just after her eighteenth birthday, over five years ago. Despite the challenges, she not only faced demanding treatments but also embraced life with passion, traveling far and wide from her hometown of Worcester. She journeyed across the United States, Australia, Italy, and most recently to Rome on Easter Sunday. Tragically, just three days later, she passed away in Assisi, a place that held deep significance for her and her family.
Those who knew Molly remember her as a vibrant soul, radiating empathy, curiosity, and a mischievous sense of humor wherever she went. “Whenever you were with Molly McGovern, you knew it was going to be a good time,” shared Kathleen Gearan, one of the sisters Molly lived with in Newton.
The joyful energy that defined her life remained until the very end. According to her family, after filling the room with laughter and stories following supper, Molly suddenly became unwell, taking them all by surprise.

She told him that, given the goodness Molly brought to the world, she believed Pope Francis, known for his deep spirituality, might have been joined in heaven by yet another angel.
At Molly’s funeral, her father delivered a eulogy filled with both warmth and humor. “To be honest, my first thought was: ‘Oh my God, poor Pope Francis,’” he joked, drawing a smile from the crowd.
